From Concern to Command: School Protection Group’s First Session

First Meeting of the School Protection Group (SPG)

The first meeting of the School Protection Group (SPG) was held at St Monica English Medium School on 13th August. The objective of the meeting was to strengthen safety measures for students and create awareness on issues affecting their well-being.

The meeting was attended by Manager Rev. Fr Melwyn D’Souza, Principal Sr Sharmila Pandranki, Vice Principal Fr Suraj Joseph Lobo , three teacher representatives, four student representatives, the local Ward Member, PTA Vice President, a local business representative, and police officials Mr. Babu and Mr. Sharath Kumar (Station House Officer, Kumbla Police Station)

Rev. Fr Melwyn D’Souza delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the significance of the SPG in ensuring a secure and supportive learning environment.

Mr. Babu addressed the gathering on the growing menace of drugs, their harmful effects on youth, and the urgent need for preventive measures. He highlighted that children today are far more advanced in technology than before, making it crucial for parents to stay informed. He stressed that awareness programs for parents are even more important than those for children. He also announced the introduction of a complaint box in schools, where students can confidentially share their concerns directly with police officers.

Mr. Sharath Kumar spoke on the importance of responsible parenting, adding that parenting styles must adapt with changing generations. He emphasized the role of community involvement and vigilance in reducing students’ exposure to risky influences.

The members discussed future initiatives, including regular awareness sessions, stronger school–community coordination, and student counseling programs. An SPG Committee was officially formed with Rev. Fr Melwyn D’Souza as Chairman and Mr. Sharath Kumar as Convener.

The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Mrs. Keerthy, appreciating the presence and valuable contributions of all attendees.
